A Dead Girl's Story

We were in Northern Wyoming, driving back from her father’s ranch early one morning.
The Elton John song “Benny and the Jets” came on the radio.
Cheríe said, “This song always reminds me of my cousin.  She died in a bank robbery in San Diego.”
“You mean the cops killed her?” I asked.
“No, she was caught in the crossfire.”
We drove on, and when the song ended Cheríe said,
“She was real pretty... she’s in that real big cemetery where John
Wayne is buried.”
